Marte Bjørndal is a dynamic artist who launched her career with the exhibition PROLOG in Oslo, Norway, in 2010 at Gallery A. Since then, she has created and embarked on diverse art projects made by Marte Bjørndal across the globe, from Brazil to China and her native Norway. Through her work, she investigates modern poverty as a complex global issue, often involving and collaborating with scholars from various disciplines to enrich her artistic research. Her vibrant art, influenced by German and abstract expressionism, reflects her bold approach to addressing societal themes.

B​jørndal, born in 1974, studied painting in from 1994 to 1996 and has since been dedicated to a diverse body of work, including paintings, drawings, poems, photography, performance, and video. She made her debut with a series of expressionist paintings in 2010 and launched the innovative international art project, The Art of Goalgetting, in Cape Town the same year. This project, rooted in abstract expressionism, explores art beyond exclusive realms, focusing on communities affected by slums, crime, and socio-economic issues Through an anthropological lens, she addresses existential themes and challenges traditional divides of east/west, northouth, and rich/poor, resulting in four large-format action paintings created outdoors

Bjørndal has made significant contributions through her work in South Africa, Brazil, and Russia, culminating in an invited lecture at Yunnan University during the Painting Anthropology Conference and Anthropology Painting Exhibition in December 2019. Introduced by Dr. Sha Feng and Dr. Cheung Chi Pi, she discussed her international project work and the exhibition Androgyne Gymnastic City in Oslo. By fostering connections across diverse disciplines, she has built a vast international network encompassing academia, journalism, art, entrepreneurship across four continents. Notably, her project Fotogrisen, staged in front of The Norwegian Parliament in 2017, marked a pivotal moment in her critique of Norway’s welfare system, often regarded as one of the best in the world.
